A NOTE from the DIRECTOR

Crimes of the Heart centers on the relationship between three sisters, a tie which is something very extraordinary. Regardless of differences, you are inextricably bound to them, concerned for them, and either enraged or enraptured by them. My own sister has always inspired me to want to direct a play about the sister-connection and once gave me a book entitled "The Love between Sister" from which I'd like to off you the following quotes:

"When one sister is threatened or alarmed, or when some ominous event looms, it is as though an invisible thread between our bodies has suddenly tautened, and the others are drawn towards the source of the twitching disturbance. Any outside threat possesses an unknowable, arbitrary, swooping quality and we are constantly on guard against it, since any attack on one of us constitutes an attack on us all, any breach in our circle renders each one more vulnerable. We always know, evenwhen apart, when any one of us is in trouble."

--Polly Devlin

"We disagree all the time. Remember things quite differently. Disapprove of one another's choices. Are maddened by each other's habits. But are sisters--and so tied into one another's lives--necessary in some strange way to each other's existence. We stand on the same ground--and there we are inseparable."

--Pam Brown

"I claim the right as a sister to worry about you, to nag you, to star very hard at your boyfirends, to criticize the length of your skirts, the cut of your hair, the shade of your lipstick. I promise to cry at your wedding. Spoil your children. Send you vulgar postcards and ridiculous presents when I'm on holiday. I will sleep on your floor if you need me. Dontae a kidney, Organize secret parties for your special birthdays. Lend you money. And persuade you to spend far too much in the Sales. I will praise, scorld, rejoice and weep for you and stand by you forever. … For all this is a sister's prerogative."e;

--Pam Brown

Please enjoy these quirky sister, their relationships with each other, and their interactions with a priggish cousin, a youthful lawyer, and a lost love.
